BIO

Full Version

Jim Hopkinson is an author, writer, speaker, and teacher living in New York City. His focus is on career development for the new economy, showing how new media, technology and branding are changing how people look at their career and lifestyle.

His book “Salary Tutor: Learn The Salary Negotiation Secrets No One Ever Taught You” (Grand Central Publishing) has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, New York Post, and Forbes. Based on his own experiences in the working world, it uses an easy-to-follow storytelling approach — along with case studies, illustrations, and just the right touch of humor – to help people get paid what they deserve.

Jim hosts a popular blog and podcast called “The Hopkinson Report” that teaches people how to pursue their ideal career and lifestyle. He has interviewed more than 70 guests, from actor/comedian Adam Carolla to entrepreneurs driving the growth of the digital age. The show has been called “audible caffeine” for its high-energy approach.

In 2012 Jim co-founded Reboot Nation, a conference and newsletter that helps people transition from full-time work to independent careers. He teaches a social media class at NYU, and his business writing has been featured online on The Wall Street Journal, Wired, and Yahoo Finance. He also pens a regular column for 21st Century Business Review, a leading business magazine in China.

Previously, Jim was a marketing director at Condé Nast Digital, managing the online marketing and social media strategy for Wired.com. While there he championed Wired’s first iPhone application, launched and curated their Facebook page, and grew their Twitter presence from 8,000 followers to more than 1 million. An avid sports fan, prior to Wired Jim spent 8 years in digital production and mobile marketing at ESPN. He was also the third employee of a Boston-based multimedia startup which pioneered the use of MPEG video.

Despite living in Manhattan for more than a decade, the Boston native maintains his unhealthy devotion to the Red Sox. He feeds off the energy of his urban environment and gets his best ideas while running (having completed the New York Marathon in 2007), but has also sought out the best mountain bike trails in the Pacific Northwest and Malbec wine in South America.
